The Verbally Abusive Relationship—Expanded Third Edition: How to Recognize It and How to Respond (Adams Media, 239 pages, $15.95, paperback) is penned by one of the most knowledgeable and foremost authorities on verbal abuse, four-time best-selling San Francisco–based author, Patricia Evans. Featuring examples, advice, and strategies for dealing with and overcoming verbal abuse, this practical guide is a must for anyone looking to face the issue head-on and deal with it in a constructive and healthy way.

Monday Hearts for Madalene (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 112 pages, $16.95, hardcover) beautifully captures the meaning of true love as this touching story of one woman’s undying and creative love for another inspires readers to “love fiercely.” The author, San Francisco Bay Area native Page Hodel, constructed the over 100 hearts featured in the book, showing readers that love can be crafted in many different ways.

Travelin’ Light Is Not For Me: Worries Weigh A Lot (The Electronic Playground, 150 pages, $19.95, hardcover) by San Francisco-based writer and illustrator Niko Mayer. This delightful tale follows Niko Mayer, a self-proclaimed intensive luggage traveler, on her escapades around the globe and chronicles her mishaps, while giving tips for traveling light.

The Sacred Well (Harper Paperbacks, 400 pages, $14.99) by award-winning travel writer Antoinette May of Sacramento. The novel is a mystery saga set in Yucatan, Mexico, that follows two women who have found themselves in political and romantic entanglements.

When the Water Came Up To Montgomery Street: San Francisco During the Gold Rush (The Donning Company Publishers, 160 pages, $35, hardcover), written by Charles Fracchia in association with the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society. Fracchia recreates historical events that occurred in San Francisco beginning with the Gold Rush through to the present, which he believes lead to the city’s exceedingly tolerant atmosphere.

City By Design San Francisco (Panache Partners LLC, 256 pages, $40, hardcover) is a first edition coffee table book celebrating the diverse history of Bay Area architecture, including picturesque photos and stories about the people who brought them to life.

Bad Mother: A Chronicle of Maternal Crimes, Minor Calamities, and Occasional Moments of Grace (Doubleday, 224 pages, $24.95, Hardcover) by Berkeley author and mother of four Ayelet Waldman. This nonfiction work, divided up into eighteen of Waldman’s most opinionated essays, examines life as a modern mother with all its fears and worries, and why women are so hard on themselves.

Spectacular Wineries of Sonoma County (Panache Partners, 300 pages, $40, hardcover) is part of the “Spectacular Wine Series” covering vineyards and winemakers throughout the country. More than 250 images of rare blends, sustainably grown grapes and mouth-watering brews, along with testimonials and histories from wine producers, showcase Sonoma County’s distinctive wineries.
