The SF Symphony will launch its 99th season and the beginning of the Bay Area arts season on Tuesday, September 7 with a festive Opening Night Gala. The celebration begins with cocktail events at 5:30 p.m., followed by three elegant dinners—Patrons’ Dinner, Symphony Supper, and Symphonix Dinner. At 8:30 p.m., Michael Tilson Thomas and the SF Symphony will open the 2010–11 season with a special gala performance featuring acclaimed American soprano Jessye Norman. The program features Hector Berlioz’s “Roman Carnival” overture, “Suite No. 2” from Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning with Jessye Norman and the SF Symphony Chorus, and Jessye Norman performing songs by Duke Ellington, including “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing).” Following the concert, guests are invited to enjoy a fabulous after-party with complimentary cocktails, savories, and live entertainment by The Fundamentals and Jonathan Poretz and a Swingin’ Night at the Sands.
