The third Friday of the month is coming up, which means a variety of the most talented and innovative belly dancers will be performing at Tannourine, one of the Bay Area’s best and most gracious Mediterranean restaurants. The evening will be hosted by longtime San Francisco favorite FatChanceBellyDance, which, led by Carolena Nericcio, is one of the most popular and respected belly dance companies in the world, and the hub of what is known as “American Tribal Style” belly dance, a fusion of different Middle Eastern, African, Spanish, and Indian folkloric dance forms with a modern flair.
At Tannourine on third Fridays, members of the professional troupe dance alongside the Blue Diamonds: students from the advanced classes of FatChance’s eponymous Mission-based school. Representing the troupe this Friday is Kae Montgomery, who is gaining renown as a dancer of diverse styles (in addition to FatChance, Kae performs as a soloist and as a member of Goldstar Belly Dance, a “tribal fusion” company also based in San Francisco). Guest dancers of other styles of the belly dance include Sandra (she goes by her first name only), a popular belly dancer in local Arabic nightclubs, and Andrea Sendek.
Every “tribal dinner” features a different mix of both professional and advanced student dancers, in addition to a seemingly infinite variety of costuming and covetable jewelry. What Tannourine’s third Fridays provides is the opportunity to get a crash-course in this ancient dance form’s modern evolution and diverse incarnations—all while enjoying a delicious Lebanese meal in a relaxed, chatty atmosphere.
