Our May cover is a tribute to the life and career of artist Mark Stock (1951-2014). Modernism Inc. will present Stock’s final works this month, a psychologically penetrating new painting series that revisits his most famous character’s spellbinding history. Ten trompe l’oeil paintings conjured in the tradition of 19th century American painters William Harnett and John Haberle will be on display. An alter ego for Stock, the butler character has appeared in many of his paintings; a Chaplinesque figure absorbed in unrequited love. In the new works, the classic butler paintings from the past are depicted as postcards taped to chalkboards—and they are atmospherically evocative of John Singer Sargent and George de La Tour. In addition, the gallery will display a memorial exhibition, showcasing notable paintings from Stock’s career.
