Like the good book says — “Let there be light” — the wattage on February 21 at Grace Cathedral was off the hook during the 13th Carnivale gala.
Led by event cochairs ClementXue and RobertJ. Brown, with emcees LiamMayclem and KPIX reporter BettyYu, 463 supporters donned electric black-tie ensembles for the soiree, themed The Future Is Bright, which glowed amid the cathedral’s grand Gothic naves.
The fete featured an eye-popping light installation, “Infinity Boxes,” by artist MattElson as well as a masterful McCalls dinner menu and live auction that raised $850K for the cathedral’s community programming.
This year, event designer HeatherRice expanded the parameters of this pre-Lenten, Mardi Gras hootenanny with a light-painting photo booth, creative cocktails and a post-dinner Late-Night Revelry romp. And DJ-musician ChrisClouse curated stellar sets accompanied by drummer BrandonDavis and sax man AlekosSyropoulos.
“‘The Future Is Bright’ is a deep message of hope for all people, and a reminder of the cathedral’s commitment to being a place for connection and service in a complex world,” toasted the Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, dean of Grace Cathedral. “The community’s generous philanthropic support for Carnivale makes the cathedral’s mission possible. It supports our innovative spiritual offerings, passion for inclusive arts and the work of social justice.”
