Songs of joy rang out on September 8 as the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus — one of the nation’s most venerable — welcomed supporters to a groundbreaking at the Chan National Queer Arts Center in the Mission.

Thanks to the beneficence of a $5 million donation from chorus member Terrence Chan, the nonprofit purchased the Baha’í Faith building at 170 Valencia Street. Plans include refurbishing this Art Deco gem and transforming its 23,000 square feet into a destination — with rehearsal, recording, gallery and event spaces as well as a media center — for other LGBTQ organizations.
