In a quiet corner of the City near Lake Merced, Pomeroy Recreation & Rehabilitation Center has mightily grown its mission and care in serving people with developmental disabilities. And on February 16, in the Merchants Exchange Building’s Julia Morgan Ballroom, 200 supporters celebrated the organization’s platinum jubilee by raising $182K during the Banner of Love: 70 Years of Pomeroy dinner program.
Those funds will assist in creating three new adult classrooms and a playground near Pomeroy’s famed therapeutic indoor saltwater pool. Mayor LondonBreed was also on hand with a mayoral proclamation to honor the center as singular in the Bay Area for its breakthrough work with adults, teens and children.
The heartfelt fete also featured an auction of artwork by Pomeroy clients and a bountiful buffet of bivalves, donated by the Sancimino brothers, who own Swan Oyster Depot and have long supported Pomeroy.
“The dream of our founder, the late Janet Pomeroy, was to not only provide services, programs and a safe place for people with intellectual disabilities, but that they should also become integrated members of our society,” said Pomeroy CEO DavidDubinsky. “I believe in a future where that dream is a reality, where children and adults with disabilities aren’t looked at as less than. And that their integration is so seamless that places like Pomeroy eventually cease to exist.”
